Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis is the inflammation of the plantar fascia. What does that mean exactly? Your plantar fascia is the connective tissue on the bottom of your foot. It is ligamentous in nature and therefore is susceptible to chronic irritation. Ligaments and tendons have a poor blood supply. A poor blood supply leads to slow healing. Slow healing leads to chronic and repetitive micro tears to the structure.

How did this happen? There are many reasons that you may develop plantar fasciitis. Weight, foot wear, exercise, foot/ankle mobility and trauma are just a few of the causes. The physical cause requires a little more explanation and evaluation. Everything from hip tightness to the big toes you broke when you were 7 could be a factor.

What can you do at home? Roll your foot over a lacrosse ball daily for 5-10 minutes. Ice the foot after exercise and activity. Work on your overall flexibility and mobility.

Treatment options if you don’t like your feet being touched. A Podiatrist can evaluate you for Orthotics, prescribe NSAID’s and perform corticosteroid injections.

Chiropractic treatment in our office would start with a Gait and Posture analysis. A combination of Electronic muscle stimulation, ice, heat and ultrasound would be applied for the control of pain and inflammation. Active Release Technique (www.activerelease.com) would be applied to the foot and other soft tissue related structures. Manipulation of related joints and specific rehabilitation to improve how the foot functions.
